NORFOLK, Neb. -- Election year is upon the state of Nebraska as many officials in and outside of the state will be elected to hold political office. News Channel Nebraska has provided all candidates an opportunity to share why they believe they are the best fit for their respective positions.

The Dovers are no strangers to northeast Nebraska. The generational Nebraska natives have been in and around the state for over 100 years.

Senator Robert Dover is the current state senator for District 19 in the Nebraska State Legislature. With the primaries unfolding in May, Dover looks to stay the course.

"For over 35 years I have supported fiscally and socially conservative candidates for office," Dover said. "I think it is why some people reached out to me when Mike (Flood) became congressman. The vacancy opened up and that's why I think people would ask me if I considered running."

Gov. Ricketts appointed Dover to the seat, which was previously held by Rep. Mike Flood. Dover has held the seat with the intention of carrying it over to his first public election.

"One thing that he [Ricketts] did insist upon is that I wouldn't be a placeholder," Dover said. "He didn't want someone to have two and a half years of experience and just have that go to waste."

Dover's priority bill, which pertained to affordable healthcare, was a topic he said he cared deeply about.

"I remember when we had four kids growing up, the burden that healthcare puts on a family is tough," Dover said. "Talking to individuals and families, that is a main concern in the budget."

Primary elections will be held in May.
