Wausa seeks to add a new track with $2 million school bond
WAUSA, Neb. - Athletes at a school in Northeast Nebraska run the hundred meter sprint on a grass track instead of a rubber one. Now the school district is asking for support with helping update fundamental needs through a bond.
The Wausa school district is proposing around a two million dollar bond that would give their athletes a rubber track, and spectators ADA certified seating.
Athletes health was at top concern when coaches presented the idea to superintendent Brad Hoesing.
“The track coaches came to us and talked at length about the need for a safe adequate practice facility, and a competition facility”, said Hoesing. “So when we started going through the process of cost and the types of the facilities we have, our board came to the decision that it it was time to go to bond, ask the question to our public and see if this was the right time and the right process.”
Wausa is no stranger to passing bonds. The school district passed one in 2018, which led to a massive renovation and building project.
the new bond would add a $29 increase to taxes for every $100,000 of residential property.
Agriculture land varies depending what is being produced.
Hoesing says hearing feedback from tax payers is a necessary part of the process that helps make sure nothing slips through the cracks.
“Because our board works really hard but they don’t think of everything,” said Hoesing. “And so those questions are really good for our board to go back and say, okay these were great questions how are we as a board going to answer these so our public can even get that much more information.”
If the bond were to pass, Hoesing wants the public to know that the new facility would be open to the community 24/7.
“ Oh absolutely”,said Hoesing. “I think when any time you have tax payer funded facilities that they need to be open to the public.”
The school district says ballots will be mailed out on Tuesday October 14th and they stress to that if you’re sending your ballot in the mail todo so a week before the November 4th election date.
