STANTON - The Stanton Mustangs played with grit and determination on Tuesday night, coming from behind to defeat the Plainview Pirates in a double overtime thriller.

The Pirates jumped out to a quick 14-6 at the end of the first quarter, but they would not outscore the Mustangs in any quarter the rest of the way. The Mustangs battled back to cut Plainview's lead to six at the half, and were down just 36-31 at the end of the third quarter.

After hanging around throughout the first three quarters, the Mustangs would make their move in the fourth quarter, outscoring Plainvew 10-5 to force overtime with the score tied 41-41. Stanton would keep its momentum going into overtime, and had a three point lead with under ten second to play, but Plainview senior John Schlote nailed a clutch three-pointer to tie the game 48-48 and force double overtime.

The Mustangs would not be denied though, as key baskets from senior TJ Larson and junior Mason Bruggeman helped Stanton hold on to a lead in double overtime. Down 55-54 with under ten seconds remaining Plainview junior Teagan Ziems had an opportunity to win the game with a basket in the paint, but he was unable to score allowing the Mustangs to win their second game of the season.

Larson lead the Mustangs with 26 points, Bruggeman scored 14 and sophomore Parker Krusemark added 13 in the victory. Plainview was lead by Schlote with 16 points, sophomore Braden Waldow scored 12, and senior Brendan Rasmussen put in 10 points in the loss.

The win snapped an 11-game losing streak for the Mustangs, and they will look to build on their momentum against Boone Central/Newman Grove on Friday. Plainvew fell to 6-7 with the loss, and will look to get back on track against Bloomfield on Friday.
