It wasn't a high scoring game between Wayne and Ponca on Saturday night, but that's exactly how Coach Rob Sweetland likes the Blue Devils to play, as they cruised by Ponca 50-28.

Wayne came out hot in the first quarter with 14 points spread amongst Alex Phelps, Colson Nelson, Sedjro Agoumba and Daniel Judd, while managing to hold Ponca to just four points.

Both teams struggled putting points on the board in the second quarter, as the Blue Devils took a 17-9 lead into halftime over the Indians.

Points were restored for Wayne in the third quarter, including a half court buzzer beater by Devin Anderson that sent the crowd into a frenzy.

The Blue Devils held on throughout the fourth quarter, despite giving up a game-high 12 points to the Indians in the quarter.

Alex Phelps led Wayne with 15 points and 5 rebounds, followed by Colson Nelson with 12 points, all from the perimeter. Daniel Judd tacked on 8 and Sedjro Agoumba finished with 6 points and 11 rebounds.

Ponca was led by Tucker McGill in scoring, as he finished with 13.

Even though Wayne lost some key senior talent in 2021-22, the Blue Devils look ready to challenge a tough schedule this season and start out 2-0.

Ponca adds lots of talent this year, but after dominating Hartington-Newcastle on Thursday, drop a tough game against Wayne and drop to 1-1.
