MADISON, Neb. -- Madison County's Sheriff was recognized by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.

Sheriff Todd Volk received the recognition at Tuesday's Madison County commissioner's meeting, after being nominated by Deputy Bret Lee.

Lee has had to take time away as a deputy to go on military leave. He said in that time Volk went above and beyond what most employers normally do, reassuring him that taking time was okay, even when the sheriff's office was short-staffed.

"He called me to make sure that I was doing okay," Lee said. "Anytime I talked to him he'd ask how my training was going. Definitely feel that he has supported the reserve more than any other company I've ever worked for."

As part of his recognition, Volk received a certificate declaring him a "patriotic employer" a lapel pin, and a commander's coin.
