NORFOLK, NE (News Channel Nebraska)- For Tim Brogan, granting his father’s last wish was something he thought would never be possible, until today.

“He did get his last wish to have the bagpipes played that were heard today,” says Tom Brogan's son Tim Brogan.

Brogan’s father, Tom Brogan, who passed away in late April was a World War II veteran. Being Irish, one of his last wishes was to have a bagpiper play at his funeral. Unable to find someone to play at his father’s ceremony, it’d seemed that his father would never be granted his wish.

But all that changed this past weekend when Brogan met Tom Denham, a Scottish bagpiper, at a country club south of Valentine. After talking, both Brogan and Denham found out that both of their father’s had fought in World War II.

“Our fathers, although we never knew each other personally nor did our fathers, fought for the same cause for what we enjoy to this day," says Brogan. " Again, it just struck a chord for both Tom and I, so here we are this afternoon just forty-eight hours later, him playing those four nice tunes.”

It was then that Denham asked Brogan if he would be able to honor his father at his gravesite in Norfolk.

“Very emotional…my mother’s still with us and so we were able to get her out here at almost ninety-four to listen to it,” says Brogan. “ When I told her that he was going to come play and told her of the situation, she broke down in tears.”

Something Tom Denham says was simply an honor.

“ I thought, well, if you could have some sort of memorial service that I would come along happily and play,” says Scottish bagpiper, Tom Denham. “This is why I’m here today and very proud to have done it.”
