Norfolk teen honored for actions following crash
Police honored a Norfolk teen after his actions helped save a life after a crash Sunday.
17-year-old Wyatt Smydra was presented with two awards at a pep-rally at Norfolk Catholic High School Friday. The Madison County Sheriff and Norfolk Police Department each praised Smydra's actions.
According to the Madison County Sheriff, an SUV driven by Jodi Schnebel caught fire after a two-vehicle accident on West Omaha Avenue Sunday evening.
Police say Smydra freed Schnebel from the wreck by cutting the seat-belt and pulling them out of the car before it became engulfed in flames.
Deputies at the scene said his actions were nothing short of heroic and saved Schnebel from suffering severe burns or worse.
Schnebel was taken to Faith Regional for her injuries. The driver of the other vehicle, Jesse Zobrist, was life-flighted due to his injuries.
The sheriff's office is investigating the accident.
