Three Nebraskans win national championship, All-American honors
SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- A total of 46 Nebraskans were on the roster as Morningside claimed an NAIA football national championship on Saturday. Now the honors keep rolling in for the Mustangs and some of their Nebraska natives.
Seven Morningside players were named All-Americans, including three from the Cornhusker State.
Leading the way were Bellevue West graduate Joe Dolincheck, who was named to the first team as a quarterback, and O'Neill native Jason Hahlbeck, who was a first-team lineman. Wahoo native and Bishop Neumann grad Reid Jurgensmeier was a second-team honoree as a wide receiver.
Dolincheck, the NAIA's Player of the Year and first-team American Football Coaches Association/NAIA All-American, led the Mustang offense. He finished a remarkable 2021 with 4,783 yards passing and 44 touchdown strikes, each of which rank among the program's season top 10 marks. He became only the second quarterback in school history to hit 13,000-yard and 130 touchdown-pass career territory. Hahlbeck and Jurgensmeier each gathered their second All-American plaudits.
Joining the three Nebraskans on the All-American squad from Morningside were running back Anthony Sims, and linebacker Tyler Wingert on the first team, in addition to kicker Chase Carter and defensive lineman Weston Schultz on the second team.
Morningside has won three of the past four NAIA national championships.
