NORFOLK, Neb. -- 2021 was a busy year for the Norfolk Police Division.

After the city of Norfolk saw a rise in homelessness in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the city saw a rise in crimes relating to drugs and alcohol.

"Between 2020 and 2021, we've seen a 10% increase in drug cases. That includes everything from Marijuana up to Methamphetamine and all the designer drugs and prescription medications as well," said NPD Captain Mike Bauer.

The police division were able to narrow down the two most common substances that they have witnessed relating to crime.

"From an illegal substance standpoint, Methamphetamine does have a horrendous effect on a person's life. So, yes, it is a major issue we're dealing with," said Captain Bauer. "When you look at all drugs, of course, alcohol is the most abusive drug that we have. We deal with that the most."
