MADISON, Neb. -- A northeast Nebraska murder suspect was back in court on Thursday, and he will be there again later next month for a hearing to determine the admissibility of evidence in his case.

29-year-old DeShawn Gleaton Jr. appeared in Madison County Court on Thursday, with Judge James G. Kube ruling that miscellaneous motions will be held on Feb. 23-24.

The state is ordered to provide reports from Investigator Robert Hurley a week prior to the hearing.

Gleaton is accused of murder in the July 2020 shooting death of Hailey Christiansen, of Norfolk.

Gleaton and his attorney, Todd Lancaster, have moved for an oral motion for continuance of the pretrial conference and jury trial. Gleaton was advised of the right to a speedy trial and that said motion to continue, if sustained, would constitute a waiver of this right by the defendant, for the time period requested.

Gleaton, who remains in custody, acknowledged his understanding of this to Kube's satisfaction, and upon defendant’s waiver of speedy trial, the court sustained his motion to continue.

Gleaton's pretrial conference is continued to April 25. His jury trial is now scheduled for May 9.
