Four injured, one life-flighted after crash near Dakota City

DAKOTA CITY, Neb. -- At least three people were injured and one person was life-flighted after a crash in Dakota County on Wednesday.
Traffic was diverted as a result of the crash near Highway 35 and Highway 77 near Dakota City.
The Wednesday afternoon crash involved two vehicles, including a box truck and a pickup pulling a trailer.
Dakota County Sheriff Brian Fernau said that a box truck hauling battery cores had a placard on it for hazardous materials.
Fernau said that it is required for that type of placarded vehicle to stop at a railroad crossing, and the box truck was doing so. He said the pickup hauling a trailer was following so the box truck and the driver failed to see that it was slowing for the railroad crossing.
Fernau said that the pickup driver attempted to swerve but was not in time and struck the back of the box truck.
Fernau told NCN that all three occupants from the pickup were transported to Mercy One Hospital by ambulance or helicopter and all are going to survive.
