NORFOLK, Neb. – A Norfolk building is coming down after nearly two decades.

Demolition began Monday on the building that previously housed Applebee's at 700 S. 13th Street. The building had been built in 2004.

Applebee's announced that it was permanently closing its doors in Norfolk in September of last year.

Starting on February 9 of this year, Starbucks Corp. began leasing the lot from Norfolk Retail Management LLC, according to a search of Madison County deeds.

City records show that a permit was issued for demolition at the site on February 16, 13 days after a permit was issued for a new commercial building on the lot.

According to Norfolk City Planner Valerie Grimes, the new building was approved to be half restaurant, half mercantile. She said the city has not received official word on which restaurant would be inhabiting the space.
