New car wash shows ways to be eco-friendly
NORFOLK -- A new car wash in Norfolk aims to level up people's expectations.
"We've been working on bringing Tommy's to Norfolk for almost three years," Ben Conover, co-owner of Tommy's Express said. "Finding a spot on 13th Street was almost impossible."
He and co-owner Matt Preister started the project about nine months ago -- almost as long as their wait for glass windows has been.
"[So instead of glass] We're actually going to board the whole thing up, get epoxy in it, and get the whole thing going on Monday," said Conover.
A few things make Tommy's Express unique. Namely, it recycles 80% of the water. Alternatively, in a traditional car wash, as much as 30 gallons of water is completely wasted per car, according to Bring Wash. Protecting water is especially useful when places like the Colorado River have declined this year to just 20% capacity.
The Environmental Protection Agency also notes the potential harm of car washes that aren't in the style of Tommy's.
"Professional car wash systems create wash wastewater that can have a great impact on the environment if not properly managed and discharged," a report from 2002 noted.
Conover noted, "All of our chemicals are environmentally friendly."
Plus, Tommy's Express partners with the nonprofit Water Mission -- which helps people in developing countries obtain clean drinking water.
Another perk of Tommy's Express, according to owners, is that their wash has an app for members to get free washes and other rewards.
It should open mid-June, when there will be a free-wash weekend and give-aways at the grand opening such as a grill and free passes.
"We're kind of impartial, probably biased," laughed Conover, "but we have the highest quality equipment, and our system with the membership makes it so easy to use -- you can do everything from the comfort of your home."
The car wash takes two and a half minutes, while they wash a car every 17 seconds.
There are 105 sites nationally and will be about 500 sites open across the country in the next three to five years.
"Free vacuums and free mat washes too, the first month is free to test drive to see if you love us because we know you will," said Preister.
