STANTON, Neb. -- At least three Stanton County Sheriff's patrol vehicles have been damaged by nails, with Sheriff Mike Unger stating that the nails were placed "intentionally."

Unger said there were a large number of construction nails placed along a crossover on Highway 35 near Woodland Park. He said the nails damaged tires on three vehicles in his department. He also said a Nebraska State Patrol vehicle "possibly" suffered similar damage.

Unger said the location is notable because it is where "law enforcement vehicles often park to monitor traffic and speed."

"The Sheriff’s office will continue to perform our duties to the best of our ability including stationary patrol due to high fuel cost," Unger said in a Wednesday press release.

Unger said the nails have been collected as evidence and the area has been cleaned.
