STANTON, Neb. -- One in seven children in Nebraska faces hunger, according to Feeding America. Miss Stanton in Nebraska is doing something about it.

"Some people are too scared to just tell people they are needing help, so they could just drive up to the box and get whatever they need," said 10-year-old Emerson Mae Allen, in front of the food pantry box she put up on June 22 - right off of Highway 57 into Stanton, by the recycling bins.

This is Stanton's first food pantry box, according to her family. Allen's family, sponsors, and Stanton FFA helped her put it together.

Residents can drop off food, such as her favorite - ramen - or other canned foods.

"SpaghettiOs," Allen said. "Those are good."

A Nebraska Legislature report from 2020 shows part of Stanton is in a 'food desert,' meaning people have limited access to healthy grocery stores, it's a trend among more rural communities. With inflation surging food prices, it could get worse.

The Nebraska Department of Education is rolling out the Summer Food Service Program to alleviate some of that - but even the smallest efforts can help people and, as Allen hopes, change an entire community into an ideal place where "People would be kind to each other and not bully people."
