Lincoln man accused of 100 mph pursuit in stolen vehicle in northeast Nebraska
NORFOLK, Neb. -- A Lincoln man was arrested in northeast Nebraska after reportedly stealing cars in multiple counties and being detained at gunpoint by a local citizen.
Just before midnight on Wednesday, the Stanton County Sheriff's Office reported observing a westbound vehicle on Highway 275 about four miles of Norfolk and attempted to stop it for an alleged traffic violation.
According to Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger, the driver did not stop and fled at speeds over 100 mph. Unger said the driver continued into Norfolk, at which point the pursuit was halted due to safety concerns.
At the time that the sheriff's office pulled back from the pursuit, Unger said, the only violations committed were minor infractions. Unger said that his office later discovered that the vehicle had been reported stolen.
Approximately an hour later, 34-year-old Daniel McGuane, of Lincoln, was arrested in Battle Creek by the Madison County Sheriff's Office for attempting to steal a vehicle.
McGuane allegedly told a citizen that he had fled from law enforcement and crashed his vehicle somewhere near Battle Creek. That citizen then detained McGuane at gunpoint when he reportedly attempted to steal another vehicle.
A subsequent investigation by several area sheriff’s offices found that McGuane was believed to have stolen a pickup in Lincoln and abandoned it near David City where he allegedly stole another pickup and abandoned it near Wisner. At that point, he then allegedly stole a Chrysler 300 that was involved in the pursuit and it is believed to still be in an unknown rural location near Battle Creek where he says he crashed.
The Stanton, Madison, Cuming and Butler County Sheriff’s offices are all involved in the ongoing investigation, with McGuane facing potential charges in each location. McGuane remains in jail at this time.
