NEBRASKA -- A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday the Americans with Disabilities Act covers people with gender dysphoria.

It's a win for the transgender community in a case concerning a former inmate alleging discrimination at a Virginia prison.

Kesha Williams, a transgender woman, was held for six months at the prison.

She was initially put in women's housing, but deputies quickly moved her to men's housing when they learned she was transgender.

There, Williams said she was harassed by deputies and other inmates, and experienced delays in medical treatment.

Williams sued several people connected to the prison.

Tuesday's appeals court ruling reverses a district court's dismissal of the case and sends it back to a lower court.
