BELGRADE, Serbia -- It was a big day for wrestlers with ties to Nebraska.

Former Husker All-American Jordan Burroughs became the most decorated wrestler in U.S. history on Friday, winning gold at the World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade.

After falling behind 1-0, Burroughs built a 4-1 advantage over Iran's Mohammad Nokhodilarimi, en route to an eventual 4-2 victory in the 79 kg weight class.

It was the seventh gold medal in international competition for Burroughs, giving him the most wrestling gold medals in U.S. history. He has one Olympic gold and six world championship titles.

Burorughs is a five-time World champion and 2012 Olympic champion. He was a two-time NCAA champion for Nebraska.

Meanwhile, former Nebraska high school state champion Thomas Gilman, a Council Bluffs native who wrestled at Omaha Skutt, will be joining Burroughs as a medalist.

Gilman, who wrestled collegiately at Iowa, claimed a comfortable 8-2 semifinal win over China's Wanhao Zou on Friday. He'll now wrestle in the gold medal match on Saturday.

It will be the third time Gilman has competed in the final round of the World Wrestling Championships, having won gold last year in Oslo and silver in 2017 in Paris.
