LINCOLN - Nebraska interim Head Coach Mickey Joseph has relieved defensive coordinator Erik Chinander of his duties. 

"We appreciate Erik and the work and dedication he has given to our football program," Joseph said. "At this time, I feel it's in the best interest of the Nebraska Football program to take the leadership of the defense in another direction."

Chinander had led Nebraska’s defense since Frost took over the team in 2018, but his unit floundered this year as the Cornhuskers fell to 1-3.

The announcement comes a week after Head Coach Scott Frost was fired by the university. 

Current special teams coach Bill Busch will take over defensive coordinator duties effective immediately. He rejoined the team this year.

Nebraska's defense gave up a Memorial Stadium record 642 yards in a 45-42 loss to Georgia Southern, before Saturday's 49-14 blowout loss to #6 Oklahoma. 

Oklahoma scored 49 straight points after Nebraska opened the game with a six-play, 77-yard touchdown drive. The Sooners finished with 580 total yards, 312 on the ground.

OU (3-0) posted its most lopsided victory over Nebraska since a 45-10 win in 1990 and scored its most points in Lincoln in 43 all-time visits. The Sooners have won seven of eight against the Huskers. The next meetings are set for 2029 and '30.

Nebraska has a bye week before hosting Indiana on Oct. 1.
