WAYNE, Neb. -- A crash in Wayne County shut down traffic on Highway 35 Friday morning.

Multiple emergency responders from various locations in the county responded to the accident approximately five miles miles west of Wayne on Highway 35.

Wayne County Sheriff Jason Dwinell said in an email Friday morning that his office was called to the scene of a single-vehicle accident at approximately 7:45 a.m. According to Dwinell, the preliminary investigation indicates that the driver fell asleep and struck a guard rail.

The driver was transported to Providence Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained during the crash.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation estimated that the emergency scene impacted traffic for approximately an hour.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Wayne Fire Department, Nebraska Department of Transportation, Providence Medical Center, and several members of the public.              

The accident remains under investigation.
