OAKLAND, Neb. -- The Nebraska State Patrol released more information following a September shooting in Oakland, with the shooter declaring self-defense.

Officers with the Oakland Police Department and the Burt County Sheriff's Office said they were called to the 300 block of N Oakland Ave. on the night of Sept. 27 for a reported domestic disturbance and shooting.

According to authorities, the arriving officers found 32-year-old Ryann Schuman with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Thomas said NSP was asked by the Burt County Attorney to investigate the incident. The preliminary investigation reportedly showed that the people involved were in a domestic physical altercation and one of them used a gun. The person who fired the gun claimed self-defense.

Thomas said the ensuing investigation indicated that Schuman had tried to prevent two people, a man and woman, from leaving the apartment. Thomas said evidence suggested Schuman attacked the woman and hit her, causing the man to fire one shot at Schuman to stop him. The man and woman left the apartment to call police for help and the woman was treated for her injuries at the scene, Thomas said.

According to the report filed by NSP, evidence and statements gathered by troopers corroborated the claim that the man acted in self-defense. There have been no arrests made and no charges are currently pending.
