NORFOLK, Neb. -- A Verdigre man was arrested for multiple charges after a high-speed pursuit in multiple northeast counties.

The Stanton County Sheriff's Office said around 2:30 a.m. they were monitoring radio traffic about a vehicle failing to stop for Norfolk Police on South 1st Street, with the vehicle last being seen heading east.

It was reported that shortly after, the Sheriff's Office tried stopping the vehicle, a 2007 Dodge Van driven by 27-year-old Joseph Hrbek of Verdigre, when it didn't stop at a stop sign on 558th Ave.

Hrbek then fled heading south on 558th Ave. at high speeds, which initiated a vehicle pursuit according to SCSO.

Authorities said that Hrbek continued south for about eight miles, not stopping at several stop signs, before turning west onto Highway 32. Hrbek continued fleeing on the highway, driving over 110 mph.

SCSO said that Hrbek fled and crossed over Highway 81, entering Madison, and continued to head west from Madison on Highway 32 - still speeding. The Madison Police Department and Madison County Sheriff's Office assisted.

Officials said that Hrbek continued at high rates of speed, heading west on Highway 45, north of Newman Grove and then started traveling south through the town. He then continued into Platte County.

SCSO reported that after crossing over Highway 91 and Hrbek still speeding on a gravel county road, they stopped the pursuit because of Hrbek's hazardous driving and the unfamiliar roads in the area.

Late on Monday, SCSO said the van was found abandoned at a residence south of Lindsey by the Platte County Sheriff's Office.

Not too long after finding the van, officials said that Hrbek was seen walking in the area and was detained at the request of the Stanton County Sheriff's Office, who had identified Hrbek as the suspect.

Hrbek was taken into custody by the SCSO and was booked on charges for multiple stop sign violations, speeding, reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, and no operators license.

He had been jailed pending the posting of a cash bond.

SCSO said Hrbek admitted to being the only person in the van, and for having used methamphetamine before the pursuit.
