NORFOLK, Neb. -- Verges Park in Norfolk is home to one of northeast Nebraska's most-known urban legends.

Verges Cave sits alone at the back of the park and has been at the center of ghost stories and lore in Norfolk.

Libby McKay, the executive director of the Elkhorn Valley Museum, told News Channel Nebraska the history behind the cave.

"Verges Cave was built by the Verges family," McKay said. "So it is a man-made cave and when you're inside it, it feels more like a bunker. It's been many different things over the years including a haven for ice skaters. At one point, there was a man-made skate pond here in the park and they would build fires and serve cocoa out of the cave. The Masons have met there, the Lions Club used to hold meetings there."

The Verges family also used the cave for parties and social gatherings.

Some people have heard voices and sounds coming from the cave, even when it is locked up at night.

Others feel the presence of someone or something with them when they are inside the cave.

McKay touched on some of the rumors that people have heard or believe about the cave.

"There are these rumors of other things that have happened in the cave and that involve the cave," McKay said. "One is that a part of it used to be a tunnel that lead to the sanitarium. There were rumors it was haunted, there were rumors it was a speakeasy at one point."

McKay said that paranormal investigators have filmed orbs and heard sounds while inside the cave.

The museum will be holding two events surrounding the cave this week.

On Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., the museum will be hosting its annual Haunted Verges Park event which will feature trick-or-treating for kids, games, and a haunted house inside the cave.

The event is open to the public and the haunted house will cost $2.

On Saturday, Oct. 29, at 8:30 p.m., paranormal investigators will be doing an investigative session inside the Elkhorn Valley Museum and in Verges Cave.
