NORFOLK, Neb. – The No. 9 Northeast Community College men’s soccer team opened their postseason journey Tuesday as they hosted a Region XI Semifinal against Hawkeye Community College in Norfolk. The Hawks prevailed by a final score of 5-0 to advance to the Region XI Championship.

The Hawks (17-4, 6-2 ICCAC) had defeated the RedTails by one goal in both of their previous matchups in the regular season, but Tuesday’s game wasn’t nearly as close. Northeast had great goal chances early and often in the contest, and although it took some time for the Hawks to get on the board, they took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break. Three more goals came in the second half as the men’s soccer team clinched a spot in the Region XI Championship for the first time in program history.

Goals: Conor Carew (Carlow, Ireland), Paul Einero (Cape Town, South Africa) (2), Tomas Espinoza (Santiago, Chile), Jamie Le Comte (Dunedin, New Zealand)

Assists: Conor Carew, Paul Einero, Sergio Aspas, Thomas Nielsen (Oestervraa, Denmark), Teun van der Donk (Rotterdam, Netherlands)

Head men’s soccer coach Adam Potter on what he liked from his team in today’s showdown:

“Loved how we locked in,” Potter said. “We were from the start to the finish and when things didn’t go our way we stayed composed throughout.”

Potter on facing the No. 7 Blackhawks for the third time next:

“We didn’t want it any other way!” Potter said. “We are ready for a battle!”

Northeast will duel with No. 7 Southeastern Community College in the Region XI Championship at 3 p.m. Saturday in West Burlington, Iowa.
