Dakota County gets into Christmas spirit with tours of historic Homer homes
HOMER, Neb. – A northeast Nebraska community geared up for the holidays by giving people a taste of history.
Each of the past two weekends, the Dakota County Historical Society gave tours of Victorian homes that were decorated for Christmas. The homes were all built between 1860 and 1870 according to Dakota County Historical Society President Dennis Reinert.
Tour guides also gave people an inside look at an 1850s schoolhouse and the local museum.
The schoolhouse is the oldest in Dakota County and is believed to be the oldest in Nebraska.
The main attraction was the O’Connor House in Homer.
The event was free and open to the public, and guests were treated to hot cider and cookies.
The tours were given by community volunteers.
The Dakota County Historical Society is dedicated to the preservation and publicizing of the history of Dakota County.
