NORFOLK, Neb. -- A press release from the Lower Elkhorn Natural Resource District (LENRD) has announced a new program for reverse osmosis.

The LENRD will pay private well owners to install a reverse osmosis system.

According to the press release, the reverse osmosis system will improve drinking water by removing nitrogen and other contaminants from the water.

Over $1.2 million is available through the state revolving fund to reimburse private well owners for installing a reverse osmosis system.

Homeowners are also eligible for up to a $4,000 reimbursement for under-sink or whole-house water treatment systems.

There are three requirements that must be met in order to be eligible for the deal.

The private well must be registered with the Nebraska Department of Resources for a one-time $70 fee.

The well also must be tested through the State Lab to see if the water qualifies, which can be done independently or free through the LENRD.

Finally, a cost estimate from a licensed plumber must be submitted for the installation of a reverse osmosis system certified by the American National Standards Institute.
