KNOX COUNTY, Neb. -- Not many can say they have had close encounter stare-downs with mountain lions and lived to tell the tale, but one Nebraskan is sharing footage of one such meeting.

In footage sent to News Channel Nebraska by Don Wisnieski of Norfolk, it shows a close encounter with a prowling mountain lion just outside of a cabin in northern Knox County, along the banks of the Missouri River.

Sightings of mountain lions in Nebraska have been on the rise in recent years, but there isn't a consistent count of the population in the state.

A survey of the Pine Ridge area in Nebraska in 2019 estimated about 40 mountain lions in the region.

Nebraska Game and Parks officials say in the last decade there have been breeding populations of lions found in four different areas of the state.
