NORFOLK, Neb -- A former employee of North Fork Area Transit spoke during Monday's city council meeting, urging Norfolk to find a way to keep the non-profit afloat.

In the public comments section of the meeting, former North Fork Area Transit employee Jackie McPhearson pleaded with the council to continue supporting NFAT.

The transit non-profit is currently under investigation for an alleged $740,000 embezzlement against its former general manager.

McPhearson says suspended general manager Jeff Stewart's actions have devastated her and have endangered numerous people's ways of life. McPherson says she understands everyone's anger but pleaded with the council to continue to find ways to support NFAT.

"Seventy people are going to lose their jobs because of what he (Jeff Stewart) did," McPhearson said. "There are people that are going to be in this community that is going to be left behind. People that go to their jobs, or are mentally handicapped, physically handicapped and they need this, they need this service."

McPhearson made additional claims during her speech, stating that she told the Nebraska Department of Transportation in October about Stewart's actions.

"I can't change the past, but we can change the future," McPhearson said. "I just want you guys to listen to what I have to say and save this community from this tragedy."
