NDOT prepares for cold weather, high winds, potential snowfall
NORFOLK, Neb. -- High winds and chilly weather is expected to hit Nebraska this week, and the Department of Transportation is getting ready for it.
On Tuesday, News Channel Nebraska talked with Tim Koenig, the district operations maintenance manager at Nebraska Department of Transportation District 3. Koenig said starting Wednesday night, winds as high as 30-50 miles per hour and cold temperatures in the single digits will begin to hit the northeast region of Nebraska. Cold weather and the wind are Koenig's biggest concerns heading into the rest of the week, as low temperatures can create problems for cars and worsen conditions on the road.
"We're really worried about the cold," Koenig said. "It can cause a lot of issues with your cars...it's just very dangerous sometimes, and visibility is not going to be very good on top of this with the blowing and drifting snow."
Expected snowfall for the next two days is a mystery according to Koenig, due to the speed of the expected weather. However, even one to two inches of snow can cause issues when paired with high winds. Koenig said drivers should expect reduced visibility if it snows. Koenig says NDOT is continually being updated on the forecast and expected snowfall. He says they are preparing as best they can, recalling workers who were sent out to western Nebraska to help clear roads in District 3.
"Other than that, we're just making sure all of our equipment is up and running as best we can, and making sure our fuel is good," Koenig said.
Koenig recommends drivers can visit the 511 websites to check on road conditions and to avoid driving if at all possible.
