BATTLE CREEK, Neb. -- The Lower Elkhorn Natural Resource District approved a motion to no longer pursue Battle Creek flood control projects that would require a dam.

It comes after landowners have repeatedly asked the board of directors to not pursue such a venture. The LENRD has been researching potential flood control in Battle Creek projects for years.

Most recently, the LENRD was conducting a survey with JEO consulting, which proposed a three-dam project and was nearing completion. Landowners in the surrounding area of Battle Creek have expressed their concerns about losing land if a dam was constructed.

The motion passed in an 11-4 vote. Directors voting in favor were Jay Reikofski, Matt Steffen, Anthony Wisnieski, Jerry Allemann, Rod Zohner, Jim Aschoff, Scott Clausen, Mark Burenheide, Roger Gustafson, Kris Loberg, and Mark Hall. Those in opposition were directors Melissa Temple, Chad Korth, Mike Fleer, and Gary Loftis.

The LENRD will continue to find ways to help mitigate floodwater in Battle Creek without the need for a dam.
