OMAHA, Neb. -- In its short lifespan, Union Omaha has already survived a global pandemic, and won a USL League One championship.

Now, the club is outlining their next move to continue development, a plan that would provide Union Omaha with their very own downtown soccer specific stadium.

Union Omaha president Martie Cordaro said that the new proposal would allow the club to interact with the community.

“This is an opportunity for soccer to have its own venue,” he said. “Whether it is the men’s team, a potential women’s club, academy, or community events.”

Along with the potential launch of a women’s club, Union Omaha said the proposal would allow them to compete at a higher level in US soccer, the second division USL championship.

Cordaro adds that this new project would also yield major benefits for the Omaha and greater Nebraska community by adding intrigue for young soccer fans.

“This is just one of many things that community leaders are doing to change the perception of the state of Nebraska,” he said. “On how welcoming it may be to young talent.”

Hunter Fangmeyer, president of Union Omaha’s independent supporters group the Omaha Parliament, said that this ambition from the club creates great excitement among supporters.

“It’s not just an investment into a sports team,” he said. “This is an investment into a community.”

Fangmeyer said that a soccer specific stadium can help take the club’s game day atmosphere to the next level.

“It’s a community home to say, ‘this is our citadel’,” he said. "This is home."

The address of home may be moving soon, but Cordaro said he feels the community support as the club takes the next step into its development.

“We’ve made an investment,” he said. “Now we’re excited to have the state and others make an investment along with us.”
