Twinning and winning: Yutan’s Pehrson twins become two-time state champs in wrestling
YUTAN, Neb. -- Sophomore twins Aubrie and Alexis Pehrson have each won back-to-back state wrestling titles, making both part of a short list of female two-time state champions after the second year of sanctioned girls wrestling in Nebraska.
Alexis Pehrson said it's special to experience the success with her sister.
“It’s cool to have someone to go through it with you,” she said. “Especially since that person is my sister.”
And Aubrie Pehrson said that wrestling alongside her sister helps create a competitive advantage on the mat.
“We can push each other,” she said. “Sometimes we go at each other a little bit, but I think it helps us improve in the end.”
Both twins set goals to become four-time State Champions by the time they graduate high school, but they also hope that their success can help continue to grow girls wrestling in Nebraska.
“I hope to win state two more times,” she said. “More importantly I want to keep improving and growing the sport, getting more girls to go out for wrestling.”
At state, Aubrie person captured the 120lb weight class title, while Alexis topped the 125lb weight class. Both will be back on the mat next year for Yutan as they continue their quest to becoming four-time champions.
