NORFOLK, Neb. -- Authorities warn of scam calls going throughout Norfolk.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office said that over the last 24 hours there have been several Norfolk residents got calls from someone claiming they were a captain or lieutenant from the Sheriff's Office.

Officials reported that the called said there was a warrant or outstanding fine for the person and directed them to get cash and got to a specific location.

Additionally, the Sheriff's Office said that the victim would be directed by the caller to stay on the phone the entire time.

Authorities said that these are fraudulent calls.

The Sheriff's Office said they will never direct someone to get cash and go to a specific location. Officials noted they do not conduct this kind of business over the phone.

Some red flags that authorities noted are:

  1.  No caller I.D. information was displayed on the recipients phone.
  2.  The recipient of the call was directed to get cash, and then to somewhere other than a law enforcement office or station.
  3.  The recipient was directed to stay on the phone until the cash was turned over.
  4.  The caller volunteered some random personal information about the recipient, information that is readily available on social media.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office said that any of these red flags should tell the recipient that this is a scam call.

Officials said to never give money in any form to someone who calls without verifying the information is true.

To verify calls, authorities said a simple call to your nearest law enforcement agency will help confirm the validity of the call.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office asks that citizens be on guard for these types of calls and to not let yourself be victimized.
