Burgess pretrial hearing continued to May date
MADISON, Neb. -- The trial of a woman accused in a northeast Nebraska abortion case is being delayed again.
18-year-old Celeste Burgess appeared in Madison County Court on Monday.
Burgess and her mother, 41-year-old Jessica Burgess, both of Norfolk, are accused of burning and burying a fetus Celeste after reportedly terminating the pregnancy at home.
Investigators say Jessica gave her daughter abortion medication to terminate the pregnancy.
It is illegal to perform an abortion after 20 weeks in Nebraska, a point that the state argues Celeste Burgess was past at the point of the alleged abortion.
Investigators say in court documents that both Celeste and Jessica Burgess discussed terminating the pregnancy via Facebook messages.
Celeste Burgess is scheduled to be back in court for a pretrial hearing on May 22. Her trial has been delayed until July 11.
