Norfolk to start week three of water main flushing

NORFOLK, Neb. -- The City of Norfolk said the Norfolk Water Division will be starting its third week of water main flushing.
The Water Division said they will do the flushing during the evening and overnight hours starting at 8:30 p.m. and ending at 6:30 a.m.
It will start on Sunday evening and stop Thursday morning.
Officials said there will be no flushing on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday evenings.
The plan is for the flushing program to be done by June 2.
The Norfolk Water Division asks that the public refrain from parking near fire hydrants in the affected areas.
During the week of May 7 to May 11, the Water Division will be flushing areas from 18th St. east to 7th St., south of Georgia Ave. to Ta-Ha-Zouka Rd., and this includes all areas south of Omaha Ave.
The affected locations will include:
- Grant School
- The Meadows
- Highland Dairy
- St Joseph Nursing Home
- Fire Station #1
- Sunset Plaza
- Holiday Inn Express
- Ponca Housing Authority
- Milk Specialties
- Skyview Medical
- Westside School
- Faith Regional East Campus
- AWG
- Midwest Allergy & Asthma Clinic
- All commercial locations along 13th St. from Maple Ave. to Ta-Ha-Zouka Dr.
The city says the reason for the flushing program is to remove the buildup of iron and manganese deposits that have collected in the water mains.
The Water Division says that the water is bacteria free, but it's not recommended to consume the water if it is extremely discolored.
Customers that live in the areas that are affected by the flushing program are encouraged not to do any laundry tasks during the flushing.
They also recommend isolating ice machines to prevent any iron and manganese deposits from plugging the ice machines.
