NORFOLK, Neb. --  The fifth week of water main flushing in Norfolk will start May 21.

The Norfolk Water Division said they will be flushing the next section of water mains from May 21 to May 24.

They will be doing the flushing over night from 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., Sunday through Thursday morning. There will be no flushing Thursday, Friday or Saturday evenings.

The flushing is estimated to be done by June 2.

The Norfolk Water Division asks that the public refrain from parking near fire hydrants in the affected areas.

The areas that will be flushed during the fifth week are all areas from First St. east to Victory Road, from Benjamin Ave. to Omaha Ave.

Locations that will be affected in these areas will include:

  • Nord Addition
  • Hy-Vee East
  • Memorial Field
  • NPPD Call Center
  • Northeast Community Colelge
  • Meadow Ridge Subdivision
  • Sparklight
  • Animal Shelter
  • Victory Villa
  • Legacy Park
  • All commercial locations along E Norfolk Ave. from First St. to Victory Road, and E Omaha Ave. from First St. to Victory Road.

The city says the reason for the flushing program is to remove the buildup of iron and manganese deposits that have collected in the water mains.

The Water Division says that the water is bacteria free, but it's not recommended to consume the water if it is extremely discolored.

Customers that live in the areas that are affected by the flushing program are encouraged not to do any laundry tasks during the flushing.

They also recommend isolating ice machines to prevent any iron and manganese deposits from plugging the ice machines.
