NORFOLK, Neb. -- The Nation of Patriots kicked off its annual Patriot Tour in Nebraska Saturday making a stop at the Norfolk Veterans Home to honor those who have served their country.

The Patriot Tour has been honoring veterans of the past and present since 2009 while raising over $1 million to provide families with assistance.

Founder and Executive Director of the Nation of Patriots, Bill Sherer, said that every year all volunteers gather to execute the tour to show their appreciation to those who laid their lives on the line.

"Plan and plan and plan and plan and then it ends and then we plan and plan and plan again," said Sherer. "It never stops and as the Congressman said you know we're all in this together. This is a huge effort by nothing but volunteers who come out here to do the right thing by the people that have served this country and made it the place that we love."

This year's American flag featured in the tour has flown over the nation's capitol and will travel through all 50 states across America.

Congressman Mike Flood said that the nationwide journey shows unity amongst all American citizens.

"The fact that this flag goes through all 50 sends the message that we're in this together and it doesn't matter what political party you're in, doesn't matter what part of the country you're in, freedom belongs to all of us, and we have to work, myself included, every day to protect it," said Congressman Flood.

The Patriot Tour ended the stop with its Passing of the Flag Ceremony to bestow the flag's guardianship to another volunteer until its next in South Dakota, where it will be transferred again.

The flag and the tour will return to Nebraska in 115 days to complete its journey with the flag finding its resting place in the state.
