Rainfall causes project delays in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Neb. -- While recent rainfall has been good for farmers amidst the drought, it means a slower schedule for construction crews.
The city of Norfolk received updates on multiple roadwork projects taking place in town. The First Street bridge was one such project, which according to Logan Angstead of United Contractors, was initially set to open up to traffic starting in August. However, due to an increase in rain, that date has been pushed back.
"A month or so ago the project was looking like we would be done around the middle of August with opening the bridge," Angstead said. "I have to eat my words on that because since the first of July, I've had one day without rain, and that's been pushing graders and pavers back every two to three days at a time."
Angstead says they are still working to complete the project as soon as they can. The bridge is now set to open to traffic during the first week of September, barring further delays.
The Benjamin Avenue project has also been delayed by about a week and is expected to be completed by late November. Assistant city engineer Anna Allen, who was filling in for BX Civil, says the crew has finished pouring on the driveways and intersections for phase 1B on the north side of Benjamin Avenue. She also says traffic has opened up on Riverside Boulevard. Construction on the north side of Benjamin Avenue is expected to be completed by the middle of August, with work then beginning on the south side of the road.
