Norfolk Junior High reveals new additions
NORFOLK, Neb. -- "The final product was just a complete dream. It was an absolute dream come true for us,” said Meaghen Ayers, eighth grade P.E. coach.
Norfolk Junior High School held an open house Monday welcoming the public to see the completed remodeling and construction project.
The $4.9 million budget allowed for updated bathrooms, two new locker rooms, and a new weight room.
Principal Dr. Jennifer Robinson said the new additions were well received by students.
"Students were very excited to see the new space,” said Robinson. “It had been a long time since it had been renovated, and it's a lot bigger, a lot more open, and of course everything is new and clean. So, they're excited to not only be in the space but also to help take care of the space."
The project started in the summer of 2022 finishing up this fall.
The new weight room provides much more space for students since being moved from the basement.
"They have way more opportunities now that we have the right equipment, the right space, the right area,” said Ayers. “We can do more things, we can try different activities, anything to help our students become better athletes."
Pam Handke who attended the junior high from 1966-67, said the new facility is great compared to the one she used that they used to call the dungeon.
"We lived, we survived. And I guess did it make us stronger for it Doug? I think. I think so. Character building,” said Handke.
Handke said it will help students now get a head start on keeping their bodies healthy.
"Wellness is so important and physical wellness as well as mental wellness is critical and keeping your body strong,” said Handke.
The remodel has also made the school ADA accessible, also adding a tornado safe room in the new girl's locker room.
Norfolk Junior High said they are proud of the building and is excited for the impact it will make.
