NORFOLK, Neb. -- Madison County businesses want you to think small this holiday season.

As in supporting small local shops.

"Entrepreneurs are so important to our local economy and to our community,” said Business Resource Specialist Melissa Figueroa.

The Madison County Small Business Scavenger Hunt is expanding the mission of Shop Small which works to help support local small businesses.

The Norfolk Area Business Resource Network has put on the month-long hunt which includes 33 locations and counting of local businesses and community markers in Madison County.

Patrons just have to download the Turf Hunt app and game on.

"If you walk within the parameters of where a location is, then you'll get a certain amount of points for just simply finding the location and then with each location there's an additional challenge,” Figueroa said.

Although the hunt doesn't require patrons to actually purchase anything, it stills brings awareness to those business, encouraging conversation within the community.

"And I have found that you know once you foster and make these relationships and these really personal relationships with people then it's just part of the community so then you guys want to support each other and shopping small is a really good way to support our local economy and our local business owners,” Figueroa said.

Smokin Stans Owner Stan Kiepke said that they welcome any support they can get from the community.

"Especially for small businesses, we all run you know with limited lines and budgets and everything so as much promotion you can get through the chamber, council, city, whatever, it's a huge benefit,” Kiepke said.

Kiepke said that the best part of the scavenger hunt is the ability to meet new customers and provide quality service.

"I think bringing in people, getting them great food, service, and the Nebraska hometown feel, that's what we're all about,” Kiepke said.

Kiepke said that they had a great response to last years hunt, making him excited for this year.

The top participants with the most points will receive a prize at the end of the hunt.

Any business not included is encouraged to reach out to the council to be added.
