STANTON, Neb. -- After shooting a bald eagle in Stanton County, a man from Guatemala was sentenced to prison.

Acting U.S. Attorney Susan Lehr said 21-year-old Domingo Zetino Hernandez, of Guatemala, was sentenced in federal court in Omaha on Tuesday. He was convicted for violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Zetino Hernandez was sentenced to time served andhas been in custody since March 20. Zetino Hernandez is subject to removal proceedings with United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

According to court documents, law enforcement got a report of a suspicious vehicle at the Wood Duck Wildlife Management Area, in Stanton County, around Feb. 28. Law enforcement arrived at Wood Duck and went up to the vehicle with Ramiro Hernandez Tziquin and Zetino Hernandez inside. Zetino Hernandez admitted that he shot a bird and that it was in the trunk of the vehicle.

Officials said they got consent to search the vehicle and found one bald eagle carcass. Zetino Hernandez admitted to taking and possessing the bald eagle found in the trunk of the vehicle without permission.

Authorities reported that co-defendant Hernandez Tziquin remains at large. He was living in Norfolk at the time of the incident and is believed to have fled the local area around the time his arrest warrant was issued, and to date has not been located. Hernandez-Tziquin may currently be living with family or associates in Nebraska, Texas, or elsewhere. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking information regarding the current location of Hernandez-Tziquin. Callers may remain anonymous.
