NORFOLK, Neb. -- Future projects for Norfolk's Johnson Park were discussed at Monday's city council meeting.

Johnson Park has seen several changes take place in the last few years as the city works to transform the area into a tourist destination.

One proposal discussed Monday was to build a concession stand and restroom for the future ice rink installation.

While being called a concession stand, the building would be used as a place for visitors to rent ice skates to be used on the park's future ice rink.

The total cost of the project would be $265,773 with funds coming from an American Rescue Plan Act Grant.

Another plan being considered was the construction of a Nature Playground.

A Nature Playground is, as it sounds, a playground made from natural materials like logs and rocks for children to play on.

After discussing the item, the city entered an agreement with Bienenstock Nature Playgrounds to design the project.

The city said it will cost $325,000 and be funded with another ARPA grant.

Parks Director Nate Powell said the grant had certain requirements in order for funding to be given, which a nature playground would fit.
