NORFOLK, Neb. — Five years ago, the new addition to the Norfolk YMCA opened its doors to the public.

YMCA Executive Director Randy Hagedorn has been with the YMCA for 40 years.

“It’s kind of hard to believe five years ago on the 29th we actually had a ribbon cutting for our new facility,” Executive Director of the YMCA Randy Hagedorn said.

The new addition brought two new gyms, a field house with turf, a wellness center, and a weight-room.

During the five year period, memberships have jumped from just over 8,000 to 12,000.

“It just tells you what the need for the community was and how much this place gets used," Hagedorn said.

Alongside community use, he said area high schools have also used the field house for practices during hot and cold seasons.

While nothing is set in stone, Hagedorn said childcare and the pool, which is over 40 years old, are both needs the YMCA is looking at.

“Can we be apart of any of that or can we do it? We just don’t know," Hagedorn said. "There’s a lot of i’s to dot and t’s to cross before you do anything. It’s in the talk but nothing finalized.”

Hagedorn said with the community’s support, the YMCA will continue to operate successfully.
