NEBRASKA -- Nebraska's State Auditor says they've found millions of improperly paid out child care benefits.

State Auditor Mike Foley said in a report issued Tuesday morning that an audit of the Department of Health and Human Services turned up hundreds of cases day care providers exploiting the DHHS by overbilling and getting improper payment for services.

The price tag? About $12.8 million worth of billings over a nine-month period that may have been fraudulent.

Some of the examples given included day cares submitting for care on days they weren't open, including, on Thanksgiving, and some billings that exceeded the 60-hour per week cap.

In a statement on Tuesday morning, DHHS CEO Steve Corsi said they are working to retrieve the funds that were improperly disbursed, and have begun and investigation into an unnamed day care provider.
