Elkhorn Valley and Wakefield's physical match ends with a Falcon sweep
WAKEFIELD - The Elkhorn Valley Falcons trip to Wakefield was as successful as it gets, resulting in a Falcon's sweep of the Trojans (27-25, 25-22, 25-14).
The first set was really the tone-setter for the match, with both the Falcons and Trojans trading punches. For the first half of the opening set, the largest lead was only two by either Elkhorn Valley or Wakefield.
The Falcons had a nice spurt to give them a 22-18 lead, but the Trojans fought back to tie the set at 22. Elkhorn Valley jumped back ahead 24-22, but again, Wakefield changed the momentum and took a 25-24 lead with a chance to steal the first set.
Elkhorn Valley would pull away, thanks to the senior leadership of JJ Black, who ended the first set with the final kill in a 27-25 victory.
Wakefield battled back in set two, looking for Alli Brown as the go-to option, and she performed when needed.
Late in the second set, the Trojans again rallied with four-straight points to make it 24-22.
The Falcons again searched for JJ Black to close the door, giving her the final kill to win the second set 25-22.
Wakefield opened the third set with a 5-1 lead, but Elkhorn Valley chipped away to tie things at 10. From there, the Falcons took off and came out with a massive third set win 25-14, finishing the sweep.
Elkhorn Valley was led by senior JJ Black, tallying 18 kills in the win. Cameron Rutjens came away with 5 kills and two aces, while freshman Kyndal Werner had 4 kills.
In the Wakefield defeat, Alli Brown was still a bright spot, getting 14 kills along with two aces. Graceyn Keagle picked up 7 kills in the losing effort.
Elkhorn Valley moves to 18-6 on the season, while Wakefield falls to 10-15.
