Norfolk adds new winter activity to Johnson Park
NORFOLK, Neb -- A lot has been taking place in and around the city of Norfolk. Residents who frequent Johnson Park may have noticed a few new construction projects taking place. Well, the wait is over! Norfolk is getting its very own ice rink that will house some of its favorite winter sports for the public to take part in.
Norfolks Parks & Recreation Director Nathan Powell said, “The ice rink is a huge addition for the town of Norfolk. This will be a winter activity to get out and do something every day if one would like. Often times we do recreational things in the spring, summer, and fall but now this allows us to have things all year around.”
In the past, the park has tried a non-refrigerated rink but this time, the rink will have a refrigerator system which will give the rink guaranteed ice through out the winter.
The rink will also serve other sports and opportunities besides ice skating. Assistant Parks & Recreation Director PJ Evans said, “With our warming house on the back side of the rink, we plan to offer birthday packages or rent it out for their choice of use, learn to skate programs, hockey, and open figure skating for the public to learn.
If the weather cooperates, Nathan and PJ said, We could see people ready to skate as early as Thanksgiving weekend. If the warmer weather continues to stay, we can plan on a week or two after thanksgiving.
