Greg Sharpe wins Nebraska Sportscaster of the Year, revealed during live phone call
LINCOLN, Neb. — The "Voice of the Huskers" is adding another accolade to his long list of honors.
The National Sports Media Association announced Greg Sharpe as the Nebraska Sportscaster of the Year on Monday. The award is voted on annually by fellow Nebraska sportscasters. Association Executive Director Dave Goren called into Sharpe’s radio show, “Sports Nightly,” to deliver the news.
“This means an awful lot to me,” Sharpe said. “That is so nice of you to deliver the news in person to me.”
Sharpe previously won the award in 2017. He won Kansas Sportscaster of the Year in 1996 and 1999 while at WIBW in Topeka.
Sharpe announced in the spring that he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. His family said earlier this month that his treatment is shifting to focus on comfortability and quality of life.
Sharpe has called radio play-by-play for the Huskers since 2008.
