Save Money While Making the Home More Energy Efficient
Austin Energy has rebates and incentives available for people making energy-efficient upgrades. This can not only reduce the costs of these upgrades but also lead to lower energy usage and provide energy savings for local homeowners.
These incentives for upgrading air conditioning systems and weatherization encourage people in the community to make energy-efficient home upgrades. Here are a few of the incentives that Austin Energy is offering to help motivate homeowners to upgrade their properties.
Air Conditioning Upgrades
One of the most effective ways to lower energy usage and costs of a home or business without sacrificing comfort is to focus on AC upgrades. Air conditioners use tremendous amounts of energy, but by installing a new, more energy-efficient AC unit, people can lower energy consumption and cooling costs.
To encourage owners to install energy-efficient air conditioners, Austin Energy is offering a rebate averaging $350 when eligible property owners install a new, energy-efficient air conditioning system that qualifies.
Solar Screens
Windows allow natural light to enter rooms in the home. However, they also allow in heat from the sun, which is called heat gain. Windows can cause temperature gains of up to 15 degrees inside the home, causing the air conditioning system to work harder and consume more energy to keep the home cool. Adding solar screens to windows reduces heat gain, glare, and UV damage without eliminating natural light.
To offset the cost of solar screen installation, Austin Energy offers a rebate of one dollar for every square foot of eligible solar screen fabric. Depending on how many windows a home has and the size of each window, this can lead to big savings in addition to the energy savings solar screens can provide.
Weatherization Assistance
While windows are a big source of inefficiency, there are numerous other opportunities for energy improvements around the home. Austin Energy’s Weatherization Assistance provides free home energy improvements for eligible customers with low to moderate incomes. These improvements can include:
- Smart thermostats
- Attic insulation
- LED lighting
- Solar screens
- Sealing cracks and gaps in walls and ceilings and around doors
- Carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors
- Reflective roof coatings on mobile homes
These improvements are beneficial not only since they are offered at no cost to qualifying homeowners with low to moderate incomes, but they also improve comfort and energy efficiency, leading to savings on monthly electric bills.
