NORFOLK, Neb. — A woman is in the hospital after police say she was brutally assaulted by a man in Norfolk.

Police responded to a report of an assault around 6:10 Friday morning at the Gold Strike apartments. When officers arrived, a news release says they found a woman with extensive bleeding and in need of immediate medical attention. An ambulance transported the woman to a local hospital and a medical helicopter flew her to an Omaha hospital to be treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the release, the suspect had fled the scene. A Madison County deputy found and arrested 45-year-old Ryan Schmidt of Lincoln a short time later in Madison. Schmidt had an active arrest warrant out of Lancaster County. He now faces first-degree assault, strangulation and second-degree false imprisonment charges.

The Norfolk Police Division was assisted in this case by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the Nebraska State Patrol. The investigation is ongoing.
