KEARNEY, Neb. — One of Nebraska’s premier high school girls basketball events returns to Kearney this weekend, with the 2026 Nebraska Girls Basketball Showcase taking place Saturday, Jan. 10, at Kearney High School.

The event features eight matchups showcasing some of the best girls basketball teams and student-athletes from across the state, many of whom will compete in games fans typically wouldn’t see.

Organizers say the goal of the showcase is to give girls basketball athletes a high-profile platform comparable to long-standing boys basketball events in Nebraska, such as the Heartland Hoops Classic.

“What’s unique about the Nebraska Girls Basketball Showcase is it’s matchups that you’re typically not going to see in the regular season,” said Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Derek Rusher. “Different classifications, different styles of play, and really exciting games all day long.”

This year’s slate includes matchups across multiple classes, including Pender taking on Class A Millard North, along with Kearney facing Gothenburg in the nightcap.

The showcase was founded to elevate girls basketball and provide athletes with an experience that goes beyond a typical tournament.

From custom introductions and media coverage to special recognition for athletes and coaches, organizers say the event is designed to celebrate girls sports.

“Girls basketball deserves this kind of exposure,” said Rusher. "These athletes and coaches have earned the respect and recognition that comes with playing in the showcase.”

In addition to the on-court action, the event brings an economic boost to the Kearney community.

Organizers estimate attendance around 1,000 fans, with teams and spectators staying in local hotels, dining at area restaurants and shopping throughout the city.

“Those teams are staying here, eating here, spending time here,” Rusher said. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase Kearney — not just as a host city, but as a community.”

News Channel Nebraska will televise the entire event, providing more than 12 hours of statewide coverage.

The eight-game schedule begins at 8:50 a.m. and runs into the evening: 8:50 a.m.
